Goal 5: Effectively communicate and collaborate to deliver, market, and advocate for library and
information services.
Outcome 5a. Apply marketing and/or advocacy principles to demonstrate and promote the value of
libraries and information agencies.
It is easy to promote the value of libraries when I already believe in libraries so deeply. I think both my passion and creativity shines brightly in this artifact, a social media marketing plan from LIS 707. I am very good at improvising in general, so when we were given an imagined job and goal, I ran with it. Below is a social media plan for a Teen Reading Club at Middletown Public Library, which includes a timeline, resources needed, social media platform selections and justification for most choices.
Outcome 5b. Demonstrate effective professional communication to achieve common understanding
as an individual or in group settings.
Though there are a number of school and work emails I could have used as artifact 5b, I selected my LIS 708 memo-style report to display a higher level of professionalism needed to thrive in higher-level positions. This assignment was also very different from any essay I have written while in this program, so I am excited to show off different styles of writing. In 708, I learned how to use Excel to my advantage, so data created from pivot tables is also on display within this report.
Outcome 5c. Demonstrate leadership principles in an educational, professional, or community context.
In April 2024, Dr. Gao approached me and two other SOIS students to revive the ALA student chapter at Dominican University. The Information Science Student Association had a successful 2024-2025 academic year thanks to my efforts and the hard work of the ISSA Board. As President of this organization, I was responsible for steering the ship: running monthly member meetings, keeping my fellow officers focused, and discussing student concerns with faculty. The Fall 2024 President’s Report demonstrates my leadership skills in educational, professional, and community context as the people within this organization are my fellow students, my future colleagues, and my current friends.
